The redness on this tree is a natural phenomenon that only takes place once a year and lasts for less than 24 hours.  At the very first fall of snow the snowgum tree oils itself for protection from the oncoming winter. Because oil and water don’t mix, the snow does not touch the tree therefore it survives the winter.

It took the Photographer 3 weeks of waiting on top the mountain to capture this event at an average temperature of  –4 degrees. .
